Just steps from the Naruko Onsen bus stop stands a tiny shop built from a single set of shelves. Kokeshi dolls, lacquerware, produce from local farms, everyday tools from the inn — items the people of the town have placed on the shelves one by one, waiting to be discovered between journeys. No one tends the counter, but behind the shelves, the presence of the town is unmistakably there.
